What are the current federal regulations for recreational drone flying?

Recreational flight in the US is governed by 49 U.S.C. § 44809, the Exception for Limited Recreational Operations. In summary:

  • Fly strictly for recreation — any compensation (including free social-media work) makes your flight commercial and triggers Part 107.
  • Pass the TRUST test (The Recreational UAS Safety Test) — free, online, takes about 30 minutes. Carry the completion certificate when you fly.
  • Follow a community-based organization's safety guidelines (AMA, FPVFC, STEM+C, or FLITE).
  • Max 400 ft AGL in Class G (uncontrolled) airspace. In B/C/D/E surface airspace you need LAANC authorization.
  • Maintain unaided visual line of sight. FPV goggles alone don't count — you need a visual observer.
  • Do not interfere with manned aircraft. Yield the right of way.
  • Register drones at or above 0.55 lb (250 g) via FAA DroneZone. One $5 registration covers every recreational drone you own.
  • Broadcast Remote ID (Standard Remote ID, broadcast module, or operate inside a FRIA) as required by 14 CFR Part 89.

How do I get certified to operate a UAS commercially in the US?

Step-by-step path to a Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate:

  1. Be at least 16 years old, able to read/write/speak English, and in a physical/mental condition to safely operate a drone.
  2. Study the material. Free official reference: AC 107-2A. Most applicants also take a paid prep course (Pilot Institute, UAV Coach, etc.).
  3. Schedule and take the Unmanned Aircraft General (UAG) test at a PSI Knowledge Testing Center. 60 multiple-choice questions, 70% passing score, ~$175.
  4. Complete FAA Form 8710-13 for a Remote Pilot Certificate through IACRA.
  5. TSA runs a security background check.
  6. Download your temporary certificate from IACRA (usually same day). The permanent plastic certificate arrives by mail.
  7. Complete free online recurrent training (ALC-677) every 24 calendar months at the FAA Safety Team website.

How do I register an unmanned aircraft system with the authorities?

  1. Create an account at FAA DroneZone.
  2. Choose the registration type:
    • Recreational (49 USC § 44809) — one $5 registration covers every drone you fly recreationally. Get a single registration number.
    • Part 107 (commercial) — register each aircraft individually with its serial number, $5 each.
  3. Pay $5 per registration; each is valid for 3 years.
  4. Label the drone with your registration number on an externally visible surface.
